Dude That’s Insane: A Tribute to Chris Reimer

Following a year and a half since Chris Reimer’s passing, The Quickdraw Animation Society invites interested animators to contribute to a 10-minute film set to Chris’s music. No previous animation experience is necessary.

Chris Reimer played in the bands The Dodos, Women, Azeda Booth, and Gold. Chris was also a prolific composer of ambient music and a visual artist. His music reached people around the world.

As a musician, artist, and a human being, Chris had a rare talent for inspiring those around him to new creative heights. The Quickdraw Animation Society wants to pay tribute to Chris by creating a collaborative, non-narrative, animated short based around his drawings and music.

The Quickdraw Animation Society will distribute two of Chris’s drawings and a segment of the soundtrack to each animator. Animators will use one drawing as the opening and one drawing as the closing frame of their 20-second animation. Our hope is to have the film completed by the fall of 2014.

Interested artists are invited to submit a brief statement of intent and a sample of their work to Quickdraw. Artists will be selected by members of Chris’s family, friends, and musical collaborators. Quickdraw encourages submissions from everywhere. Quickdraw will provide equipment, studio space, and technical support for Calgary-based artists. Participants (especially those based in Calgary) do not need any previous experience with animation.

Participation in this project is voluntary, although we are pursuing funding to allow for an honorarium for artists. All screening fees from the finished film will be donated to the Chris Reimer Legacy Fund, a charity that funds dance and music training for youth.

Dodos new track

Following the dissolution of Women and prior to his tragic death in 2012, guitarist Christopher Reimer quietly joined Dodos– which seemed like an odd, if not impossible, fit. Dodos were a known quantity as an acoustic-and-drums (and loops) two-piece, proving effusive, melodic and spirited in a live setting. Conversely, Women’s turbulent post-punk hovered like a cloud bearing acid rain, as Reimer would often stand completely motionless on stage.

Frontman Meric Long claims that Reimer was a huge influence on Dodos’ new LP, Carrier, and lead single “Confidence” is proof enough. Rather than Long’s typical brassy, open-tuned acoustics, “Confidence” is built on the kind of small, wiry guitar curlicues Reimer would lend to Women’s output. It’s still every bit a Dodos song in the ways that matter the most, though; the melodies are warm and pleasantly rumpled, drummer Logan Kroeber forgoes mundane timekeeping to push and prod Long and in the second half, the two ditch the relative minimalism to hurtle through a breakneck jam of harmonized guitar leads that can be heard as a tribute to a man whose short time with Dodos truly moved them.

I am looking forward to seeing and hearing Meric and Logan at Sled Island next week, though it will be bittersweet for me. Chris asked me to come to Sled with him the first couple of years of the festival; I never did. Thought I was too busy at work and thought I couldn’t afford the plane ticket. This year I’ve bought a Festival Discovery Plus Pass. Gonna cram in as much Sled as I can. With/without him.

Christopher JJ Reimer Memorial Show Recaps!

Mad love and thanks to all the peeps who came out to see our boy’s show at Sled Island last week. (Two weeks ago, I guess. They say you lose time in grief. It’s true. It goes somewhere).

Also, I don’t know that I properly thanked the Sled Island Festival, and Paisley Sim in particular, for so generously making possible this event. From FFWD:

For Sim, however, one exhibition stands out from the rest: the Reimer show at MOCA. “Marc Rimmer curated it and Marc and Chris were best friends for many, many years,” she says. “It’s a collection of photographs of him by many people in his life and then we’re playing many of his unreleased, ambient scores — they’re all so textured.”

The show features a silent auction to raise funds for a foundation in Reimer’s name.

“More than anything, I feel humbled to be able to present it. I loved Chris and I hope that the show is well-received by his family more than anything else.”

Paisley, it was. THANK YOU.

Nikki’s Tribute

I want to keep this space Chris-centric (I’ve devoted other spaces online to my feelings and my grief), but I did want to share an edited version of the tribute that I read at Chris’ ceremony.

I expect that I will continue to grieve him, miss him, love him, write about him, and hear him in music for the rest of my own life, but this is one small piece, for now.

This is an edited version of the tribute that I read at Chris’ funeral/celebration of life on February 29, 2012.

I loved my brother even before he came to be gestated in our mother’s womb. I was five years old when she got pregnant. I was so excited about it, and I was beside myself with joy when my father told me that I had a little brother, that he’d been born at 6:02 p.m., and that his name was Christopher.

At the beginning he was my baby, whom I held and cuddled and cared for, then he became my little pal, the three year old who was star and co-star in all my plays, the consummate professional who never forgot his lines. When he got a bit older still, more than my brother, he was my friend, my buddy, my confidante. We took turns playing straight man and funny man. I know that since our childhood he’d gone out into the world and touched an amazing number of people, and though I was happy to share him, I always thought of him as mine first.

I’ve spent some of the past few days going through our emails, instant messages and texts, most of which are really hilarious but unfortunately entirely inappropriate to share in this setting.
